Girls Teams

7th Grade

Luis Carranza

Coach Luis Carranza has been coaching and officiating basketball for the past 31 years.  Coach Carranza brings with him 15 years of girls high school basketball experience.  When NJB first came to San Jose, He was instrumental in obtaining gym time at Yerba Buena High School, where he was the varsity girls head coach.  He currently is the Girls Player Agent for Evergreen NJB, and coaching his grand-daughters 7th/8th grade team.

7th Grade

B.K. Robertson

The 2016 season will be Coach BK Robertson's sixth season with the Silicon Valley Stars. Coach Robertson has been coaching 8th grade girls basketball at Willow Glen Middle School since 2009. He has also coached boys and girls at Willow Glen, Crittenden, and Graham Middle Schools since 2006. His teams won league championships in 2008, 2011, 2014 (2), and 2015. He will be coaching our 6th grade girls and assisting our 5th grade girls AAU teams this season.
 
Coach Robertson uses a skills-based, developmental approach with his teams. Players are encouraged to perfect their skills and strategies during practice, so those skills and strategies come more readily and fluidly during games. This approach not only yields team improvement during the season, but also player improvement that has been proven to carry on to the next level.  He will coach 5th & 6th Grades.
 

Boys Teams

4th Grade

Jesse Moreno

Coach Jesse is entering 2nd season with Silicon Valley Stars. He began his youth basketball coaching career in our SVNJB NJB Spring League. Coach Jesse holds a masters in Kinesiology from St. Mary's College and is looking to expand his coaching horizon this season in our AAU program. Coach Jesse is also associated with the Men’s Basketball program at Santa Clara University.  He began coaching in our Stars program with our youngest age group, Coach Jesse looks to implement the basic fundamentals and get these players started on the right foot for their young basketball journey.



5th Grade - Blue

Kyle Elliot

Coach Kyle has been with the Stars program for 2 seasons now. He played basketball for his High School team under Coach Tariq at Lincoln High and has provided a great experience for his young team. Implementing the proper fundamentals and building multiple skillsets, he puts the basics in place for these young players to carry on to the next level. Being relatively young and with his high school playing experience in mind, he knows what it takes to be a good player and passes this knowledge on to his 5th Grade team.
Aside from the X’s and O’s, Assistant Coach Brooke handles team communications and assists with our social media platforms. They have done an incredible job both on the court and off the court and we are happy to have them be a part of our club.




5th Grade - Green

Thomas Mathis

Coach Mathis started with our Stars program during its beginning stages. He coached several of our Girls teams and accumulated many successful seasons. He has coached at the High School level as Assistant, under Coach Luis Carranza at Yerba Buena High School. He was Head Coach for the JV team at Yerba Buena High School as well. Coach Mathis has also coached Boys teams with efficient teaching and skills development. Several of his former players have gone on to play successful High School basketball and a few to D-1 Colleges. Thomas has a great passion for the game and loves to teach young players how to play the right way with emphasis on helping them understand the game of basketball. His primary goal is to prepare children, not only to play the game of basketball at a very high level so they can play on their Middle School and High School teams, but also to develop a deep appreciation for the game in a safe environment that builds good character and life’s lessons.

6th Grade - Blue & Green

Miguel “Chief” Esparza and Jamile Young

Coach Chief and Coach Jamile have been with our program for 2 seasons now. Coach Chief brings a great motivating and positive attitude to the game. That along with Coach Jamile’s team strategies make for a good combination. Chief and Jamile have assisted with several local high school basketball programs such as Evergreen Valley and Overfelt High School. Coach Jamile has served as Head Coach for JV Girls at Overfelt from 2014 – 2016 and is currently the Head Coach for Varsity Boys at Overfelt High school. Providing a great mixture of team strategy along with positive encouragement, their teams perform very well. One great accomplishment they achieved this past season was winning first place at Reno’s Memorial Day tournament.

7th Grade

Eric Cordova

Coach Eric Cordova is the Athletic Director for both the Stars and SVNJB. He joined the program back in Spring of 2014. Originally serving as a volunteer coach for a JV NJB team, he was introduced to the Stars by a fellow coach and has been with our program ever since. Eric played 4 years of High School basketball at Evergreen Valley under Coach Sean Fernandez. At Evergreen Valley, he earned MVP awards as well as First-Team all-tourney awards. He is currently the Boys Basketball Coach at Hoover Middle School. He has lead several of SVNJB’s Skill’s Clinics and has been the lead coach at NJB’s coaching clinic as well. Regarded as a player’s coach, he does an excellent job of teaching his players skills and techniques for them to carry on throughout their basketball journey. Eric has won multiple tournaments during his time with our club bringing in 5+ tournament victories in the past 3 seasons.


8th Grade

Jan Pedrasa

Coach Jan joined the Stars team this past Fall season. He has coached with the Evergreen NJB Chapter for a year now and also coached for a season with the Titans AAU program. He is a well-rounded coach who holds a high standard in discipline as well as structure. Jan is a certified personal trainer who has a great background in maintaining health and avoiding injury. He will be working with our 7th Grade Boys team this season.
